Who We Are

Kylen’s love for reading began at an early age. His passion for reading took him to places and on adventures that could not be surpassed by a video game. His love for reading increased his vocabulary, gave him more background knowledge on many different topics and situations.
This, in turn, helped Kylen to become a better student and allowed him to pursue his dreams. As an educator, I not only want that for my kid, I want every kid who has a dream to experience the places and adventures reading can provide. And with that goal in mind, KG’s KIDS was born! Through this non-profit organization, I want to give kids all across the nation the gift of reading!

I’m Heather Granson, and I’m an educator and Executive Director of KG’s KIDS who has devoted most of my adult life to teaching elementary school children. Over half of my career I’ve been teaching primary students how to read and instilling the love of reading in the children that I teach. I understand that if children could enjoy reading, and see the value that it could reap, then the sky is the limit! In starting this non-profit, I want all children to have this gift. The gift of reading. The gift that can transport a student from their current situation to a world they have never dreamed about. My son Kylen knows and understands that reading can open doors and can change a student’s future. It helped to shape his future and he also wants that for all students.

Kylen’s Story

It all started with a punishment when I was in first grade. I had a habit of playing video games late into the night and would often sneak back when my parents went to sleep to keep playing. Seeing how far I would go to play my video games, my mom finally decided to use it against me by implementing a new rule. This new rule was a simple one: for every minute that I read a book, I could play video games. I started out begrudgingly, taking about fifteen minutes to read a single chapter book page. But as I read more and more something clicked in my mind and I finally started to enjoy reading. Soon I actually looked forward to reading more than I did look forward to the video games themselves. In fact it got so bad at one point that my teachers wouldn’t allow me to have books at my desk because I would read during class while the lessons were ongoing. So why exactly did I fall in love with the stories between the pages?

Whenever you read, you automatically expand upon the knowledge you already have as no two books are the same. They contain different story arcs, styles, tones, themes, and are so diverse even within the same genre. There are so many to choose from that it’s nearly impossible to pick a category, much less a book.

I can fly through most book series in about a day or two depending on how long they are. Most I believe were somewhat accurate representations of the original source material. I also believe that most books are better than their movie adaptations with the exception of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (the original trilogy) and the Harry Potter movies. – Kylen G.

What We Do

WHAT TO READ WEDNESDAYS:

Each month, on Wednesday, Kylen will give a suggestions of what books to read based on his childhood and current readings. He will give a suggestion for lower elementary school readers, as well as upper elementary/middle school readers.

GUEST READINGS:

To share his love of reading, Kylen is visiting schools within the DFW Metroplex. During his visits, KG’s KIDS will be donating a book for every student in the class to generate enthusiasm for reading.

SUMMER SLIDE PREVENTION:

Research has shown that students that do not read over the summer, specifically K-2 students, will lose approximately 20% of the gain that they had achieved throughout the school year. KG’s KIDS will create backpacks of not only books, but activities that will help students retain the knowledge from the school year and have them prepared to start school the following year.

HARRY POTTER ROOM TRANSFORMATION

CLASSROOM LIBRARY ADOPTION:

In it’s inaugural year, KG’s KIDS will adopt a classroom, preferably a kindergarten classroom, to stock it’s library to support literacy.

SEASON OF GIVING:

To share his love of reading, KG’s KIDS will donate a wrapped book each day in December to a classroom library. On the last school day of December, we will give a wrapped book to each student in the classroom to add to their personal collection.

SUMMER SCHOOL ROOM TRANSFORMATIONS:

Summer School can be a challenge where students are exposed to the same content that they have seen all year. Room transformations have proven to be a pivotal strategy that allows students to read without knowing that they are working academically. To break up the monotony of summer school, KG’s KIDS will sponsor three room transformations for grades 3-5 to help generate excitement for learning during the summer.

KG’s KIDS is dedicated to providing reading opportunities to all children in order to become a better student and pursue their dreams, however, we can’t make this happen without your help.

A donation to KG’s KIDS can equipped a child with literacy and essential life skills they can use to grow into adults who earn higher wages, educate their own children, and have a voice in their community. In some cases, you’ll help kids break the cycle of poverty by providing resources like: books, mentorship during the school year, summer enrichment, etc.

Help provide children a reading opportunity by becoming a KG’S KIDS official sponsor. Choose a sponsorship package or click on the Make a Donation button to pledge any amount. KG’S KIDS is 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization.
